icloud keeps automatically downloading to macbook

My Macbook (13" 2019 running Catalina 10.15.1) keeps trying to download everything on my iCloud. It won't let me stop the process. I have "Optimize Mac Storage" checked. I let it finished and then went back and clicked "Remove Download" on all the items, and it started to download them again. Went from 41 GB free to nothing.

Big Sur Upgrade 11.2.2 has caused my entire cloud storage to download onto my machine! Recently bought the new M1 AIrbook to replace my 2011 MacBook Pro - everything has been fantastic until this latest update 11.2.2, which has caused all of my iCloud files and folders to download to my new hard drive - maxing it out and rather defeating the purpose of having a fresh new, spacious Mac to edit on. Any fixes? Idea why's it's done it? I've tried deleting a few things from my hard drive, just to see what happens and they disappear from iCloud too! This was all working fine until the upgrade! Help!

iCloud Not Syncing on MacBook Pro Suddenly my MacBook Pro 15" is not syncing to iCloud... All checked ALL the settings in System Prefences and have been the same for 2 years. I also checked whether iCloud is down or not on Apple's iCloud system status site. Many files are in limbo showing they are stuck I have monthly plan for 50 GB which I use for work. see screenshot enclosed. Please address this immediately or I will have to cancel my iCloud subscription and go somewhere else because I cannot have my files not syncing!

Temporarily stop iCloud downloads to MacBook I have a 120GB storage MacBook. I want to install Monterey but cannot free up enough space. I have moved all docs etc onto external drives. What is left is Apps 24 (16 of which is the Monterey installer), system 16, Other 53GB. Also there is 7GB of iCloud Drive downloads. I have loads of iCloud Drive capacity, and have selected so that the Drive is optimised, so I don't understand why it needs to put 7GB on the HD. I have tried to remove the downloads, but it keeps putting them back. I understand that it needs to have some there, but is there a way that I can disable the downloads just while I install Monterey? Then I am happy to allow the Drive downloads back. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance
