iCloud for Windows and Surface Pro X compatibility

Got a new Surface Pro x (has an ARM processor) and only runs 32-bit apps unless the app is compiled for Arm64.

Installed Office 32-bit from office.com (my account). Set up Outlook with my outlook.com account and set that as the default profile. Set default app for mail as Outlook. Works fine.

Downloaded iCloud for Windows from the Microsoft Apps Store ( as the Apple web page advises to do so)

When installing the iCloud Outlook support component I get the dreaded error below

Done so far:

 1. Outlook set as default mail app

2. Uninstalled all versions of Office that came on the device (non english versions, store versions and all), rebooted and re-installed directly from my Office 365 account- Still same

3. Run the manual Powershell commands as per recommendations in other posts, rebooted, re-installed office (both online repair and clean installs after removing and rebooting)

4. Deleted all Outlook profiles and re-created. Made sure they were set as default

What now??

Don't know if the issue is specific to the Arm processor or whether the 32-bit Office version does not play nicely with the store version of iCloud (could try downloading an older version of iCloud for Windows and try that, though)

Does anyone know whether Apple is working on a ARM-processor compatible version if iCloud for Windows as I am assuming that is the problem

Any ideas now anyone?

Hi all... Update.

I have spent hours on the phone with Microsoft to see if it's windows, Office365 or something else related. I and Microsoft have re-installed windows and then SPX image about 4 times, manual and automated uninstalls of iCloud for Windows etc etc. They have even taken log files an analysed that. Microsoft admitted there is nothing more they can do currently as it's clear it's iCloud for windows incompatibility with the SPX and Arm processor.

On the Apple side they hav also taken logs, asked me to try in Windows Safe Mode, with another user, with a local admin users etc etc, but still the same result.

It is also clear to me that some responses I got from Microsoft and even the Apple MVP's was they they did not know that you cannot just download the 64-bit iCloud from the Apple web site... it will not install.

It's now over to Apple to recompile or remediate the product.

In the interim, I have set up my iCloud account on the SPX using the in-built Microsoft mail app and it works fine (mail, calendar, contacts etc). I love the SPXZ for work related tasks (90% Microsoft products and I can work whole day until around 4PM with about 21% battery remaining. Even run 2 x 28" 4K monitors (one through Surface Dock and one via USB-C)

My SPX is my mobile work-related device so that works fine for me in the interim. On my Mac (Bootcamp with Windows Pro) iCloud for Windows works fine.

So I await Apple to remediate it on their side.

That's my status

Apple has disappeared into the sunset and done nothing more about resolving iCloud for windows incompatibility with the surface pro X arm processor. Microsoft just want to keep reinstalling windows and office despite me saying it makes no difference, so no movement

I have set up the windows mail app with iCloud and it does my mail, calendar and contacts ok until both companies pull their finger out.

All

Can anyone who has a Surface Pro X and is also having iCloud for Windows issues, please check something for me:

1. What version of office 365 are you running (latest build?)

2. Do you perhaps have Visio 2016 and/or MsProject 2016 installed as well as Office 365

3. If you go to the Control Panel, Can you seethe Mail 32 bit icon and if you click on it does it open the Outlook Profiles? I know you can get to the profiles via the RUN (Outlook /Profiles) command. Microsoft are trying to resolve why the Mail32 icon under control panel is not working... It may/may not have anything to do with iCloud for Windows not working so I want to see if others have the same issue. The Mail icon not doing anything is only a problem on the Surface Pro X not my other Microsoft devices.

1) Go to Control Panel (Type Control Panel in the search box at the bottom left of your screen). Click on the MAIL (Microsoft Outlook 2016 (32 bit) icon.. Does it open the profiles or just briefly show the hourglass window and then do nothing

2) Go to c:\program files (x386)/Microsoft Office/root/office16. Double click on mlcfg32.cpl.. Does it open Profiles?

Just want to see if everyone has the same issue and I can pass that top the Microsoft Level 3 escalation engineers working on the case

Thank You

Hello soferfam,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

I understand from your post that you have not been able to set up your mail client with iCloud for Windows on your Surface Pro X. According to this Microsoft document you may only be able to sync your photos, contacts, and bookmarks at this time:

Using Surface with iPhone, iCloud, and iTunes

"Set up iCloud for Windows

If you're already using iCloud, you can keep using it to sync your photos, contacts, and bookmarks to your Surface.

  1. On your Surface, download iCloud for Windows from the Microsoft store.
  2. Install iCloud for Windows, then restart your device.
  3. iCloud will open and ask you to sign in. If you don't see it, go to Start , search for iCloud, and then select it.
  4. Sign in with your AppleID.
  5. Choose what you want to sync to your Surface and select apply."

Best Regards.

Thanks Sarah, that seems to be a general Mis Doc for surface not particular to Surface Pro X.

iCloud works fine on my other Surface devices. From your text above one correction is that you can only sync bookmarks an Photos without the iCloud to Outlook connector service installed, not Mail, Calendar or Contacts

I will probably need to continue my exploration with the Apple Engineers

Thanks anyhow
