I’m trying to erase my old iPhone but getting verification failed message. There was an error connecting to the Apple ID server. Is that because the Sim card has been transferred to the new phone?

Do you have to have the SIM card installed to erase an old iPhone? I already set up the replacement iPhone. When I go to the old iPhone to erase all settings/erase iPhone, I get an error message that says verification failed, unable to contact Apple server

iPhone 6, iOS 12

Greetings reneemarie,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities! I understand you're unable to erase your iPhone due to receiving a verification error, and you're curious if the SIM card must be installed for the erase to process.

The SIM card does not need to be installed to erase your iPhone. I suggest ensuring the date and time settings are set correctly on your iPhone: Change common iPhone settings - Apple Support

You can also use a computer with iTunes or Finder to restore your iPhone to factory settings: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support

If further assistance is needed, then I suggest reaching out to Apple Support, as outlined in the "If you can't erase your device" section of the following article: How to erase your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Kind regards.
