Verification Failed there is an error connecting to the Apple ID server

I’m trying to erase all information from an old iPhone 7 Plus that I have and I keep getting the message verification failed there is an error connecting to Apple ID server. This phone has been out of use since 2018. Is there anything I can do?

If the iPhone has no SIM card, try placing a SIM card in it. Then repeat the process.
