Virtualbox installation issue on MacOS Catalina

I am trying to install Virtualbox 6.1.0 on macOS Catalina.

The installation fails without any error messages and asking me to contact the app developer.

I have read blogs to allow this file in Security under System Preferences, but I am not getting an option to do that as well.

The installation worked in macOS Mojave and problem started with Catalina.

Can anyone help me on this?

Virtualbox v6.0.14 installs and works fine on Catalina 10.15.1 and 10.15.2 using Windows 10 1909, and Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS guests. Using it here.

Although it is tempting to install VB6.1, it is a new major update and I would delay installation until it has received a point update beyond v6.1.

I would not expect VB 6.1 to install on Catalina 10.15.0, nor should you remain on 10.15.0 now that the 10.15.2 update has been released. Plenty of bug fixes that Apple does not document.

We're having the same issue. Our team is moving from older Macbooks to new. Here's what we've found so far:

  • One user was able to get VirtualBox 6.0.14 installed on macOS 10.15.0.
  • VirtualBox 6.1 did not install on macOS 10.15.0.
  • Neither VirtualBox 6.0.14 or 6.1 would install on macOS 10.15.1 or 10.15.2.

Since the rest of the team has (unfortunately) already updated the OS to newer than 10.15.0, it looks like we're dead in the water and will continue using our 5 year old MBP's for the time being.

Huh. We've tried installing Virtualbox 6.0.14 on 10.15.1 and 10.15.2, on three different (new, out of the box) MBP's, and in each case the installation fails at the end of the process. (All three were 10.15.1 when fired up. We tried installing 6.0.14, which failed. We then updated to 10.15.2 and tried again, also with no luck.) Not sure what secret sauce you're using ;)

Lucky guy. Anything special you did other than the installation?

The only thing I did was to right click on the VB pkg and choose "Open" from the contextual menu. I didn't have a previous version installed since I had removed it long ago. I had used VirtualBox since 2009 but removed it, primarily because it has poor OSX/macOS guest support.
