I have taken my iPhone X to France and it has lost network connection. Is this a common problem with the iPhone X or could this just be the SIM card?

Of course it lost its connection. You don't have any service in France unless you have a French sim and carrier.
I had service for the first week I was here but I’ve only just lost and my the company my contract is with do something called home from home so it lets me use it abroad
