iPad books issue

Since upgrading to iOS13 on my 3 month old iPad, when I come back into the app the following day, the only way I can continue reading a book is by rebooting my device. The books bought through the bookstore come up fine. I can see the book icon and the % read, but I can press it and nothing happens. Has Apple made a change in the way they handle non-iTunes books?
