Logic Pro - input monitor - how to turn off???????

This is really too complicated.

All I want is something extremely simple

when the little "I" button is highlighted the input monitoring is on

When the little "i" button is NOT highlighted the input monitor is off

Is the ANYWAY at ALL to do this?

I don't want all these weird conditional things - where input monitoring might be on or off during playback or during record. How about it's on when the button is pressed and off when the button is not pressed??????

Input monitoring is always off when I want it on - on when I want it off. This is screwed.
