Unable to install watchOS 6.1.1

I have tried everything to install this patch. From Bluetooth to WiFi from the Applewatch (AW) itself and from the app on the iPhone.

I have a Series2 AW and an iPhone 8 running iOS13.3. The AW has 6.1

I actually reset all settings and delete everything on the AW and pair it as a new AW just in case previous backups interfere with the update but the result has been the same: A pop-up dialog box saying that something went wrong giving two options: Open AppleWatch app or close.

I have deleted the file many times an all options (original, after backup and as a new AW).

I don’t know what else I need to do. This patch simply doesn’t work.

Bot or not, I followed the instructions (again) but it didn’t work so I called Apple Support, after checking my case they referred me to the local Apple Store.

It took three hours, mainly because the Apple Watch takes forever on each reboot but it finally worked.

At the Apple Store the technician ran a diagnostic: all good with the exception of not the latest software revision.

Long story short is that we used a stock iPhone 8 from the store with no lock passcode to pair my erased watch to it as a new watch and get it updated. The stock iPhone had 13.2, but I think the issue was that the install script requires the watch password entry, since I have a strong password in my iPhone and unlock the watch only when it is in my wrist and that wasn’t possible given that on the watch you can only type simple numeric passwords.

So the solution is that Apple should update the installation script to allow users with that setting or go to the wipe clean and pair with an iPhone with low security in order to update it then recover a backup after unpair it from the low security iPhone.

I noticed that 6.1.1 now prompts “keyboard entry” to the iPhone similar to the Apple TV when a password is required by the Apple Watch. It is the way that my watch is now directly connected to my iTunes account.

It’s a carrier issue. You have to have your carrier reset the IMEI. You’ll have to reset your watch (erase all settings but keep plan) and hard set your iPhone maybe 2-3 times to be safe. Have your IMEI and EID numbers from your watch ready before you call them. Then after the do their part, start pairing and follow instructions. You should then not get the EDS4014 error. It will go to emergency address screen. That should be it. Hope this helps!

i have the series 3 and maybe I just got lucky trying that - I was told the iPhone 6 can no longer update to the latest iOS therefore got the watch to work again on 5.x.x whatever one that was when I paired with that old 6, making sure I selected ‘NO‘ to setting up a passcode lock for the watch whilst going through set up...I unpaired it from the 6 then paired with the 7 - flukily the 6.1.1 software update then magically worked.

Did you set up a passcode lock for the watch when you went through set up on the 6plus?

Hi ITS68,

Thanks for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. I understand you're unable to install the latest watchOS update on your Apple Watch Series 2, as an error message appears that it can't be installed. I'll be happy to help.

You've done an excellent job with the troubleshooting steps that were performed. I recommend making sure that your Apple Watch is connected to a charger and nearby the paired iPhone. From there, you can restart both the Apple Watch and the iPhone to attempt the update and see if that helps. That information is outlined in the section that says, "If you need help updating" in this helpful article: Update your Apple Watch

If that doesn't help and you continue to experience the same behavior, I suggest contacting Apple Support to review this issue further. You can contact them through this link here: Contact Apple Support

Kind regards.

Step #1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone.

Step #2. Here, scroll down to select General  Usage → Software Update.

Step #3. Tap on Delete and then again select Delete to confirm the action.

Step #4. Once done, go to the Watch app → Software Update to download the update again.

This time around, your update should happen as smoothly as melted butter spreading on hot bread. If this is not your main issue, then we have also compiled some of the best hacks and tricks that could surely resolve any update installation-related issue.

I am having the same issues! I called and talked to three different tech supports today. The last one finally told me that this is a widespread problem and that their techs are working on a solution. What makes me upset is that it seems like people have been having problems since December. At least the first post in this thread is from December. It doesn't seem to matter what series of watch or what series of phone either. Ugh! I feel helpless. My watch is reset and sounds like even if I go buy a new one, it likely won't set up correctly either. I am addicted to this watch, obviously. Not having it is driving me crazy. Come 'on Apple!

I reset a working series 2 watch to pair with a different phone (iPhone 11 Pro), and the software update failed as stated previously in this thread. Unsure what to do I went to the Apple Store on 1/27, they reproduced the same issue with watchOS 6.1.1 and said they'd send it in to be looked at.

Apple contacted me today (1/29) saying it's a hardware issue and said I could either take the watch back or pay $229 to have it repaired. I escalated the call as far as they'd let me but wouldn't budge from it being a hardware issue even after I cited this and other threads of people experiencing the same problem. A disappointing experience to say the least, and what seemed to be a cop out by a low skill technician because my watch wasn't in pristine physical condition.

Here's hoping watchOS 6.1.2 makes things right.
