Unable to setup and pair iwatch to iphone

I am unable to setup and pair my new iwatch series 3 to my iphone 6 plus. I've tried to turn off and restart both devices and it still does not work. Please help! How can I get it to connect?

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 12

If your apple watch series 3 IS new then it has watchos6 software on it and this WON'T pair with an iphone 6 plus you need a phone that has ios13 or higher on it which means an iphone 6s or higher.
