How do I store things on iCloud without it taking up space on my Hard drive?

When I go into Finder I can see my iCloud drive, and it is about 65 GB. But I am short of space on my Mac's HD, so I thought I loaded some some large files onto the cloud. It shows in iCloud in Finer, but not if I log onto iCloud.com. And it shows as being on my HD. How do I utilize the cloud to store docs without them taking up HD space?

Thanks

You don't. That's not how iCloud works. iCloud syncs your data across devices. If you delete from one place, it deletes from all. I'd suggest you buy an external hard drive to store documents. They're cheap. Or, look at a service like DropBox.
