Cannot control volume using Apple Music when I stream to my AirPlay devices on my iPhone and iPad

I used to be able to have the ability for years and would like it back. Does anyone know how to restore it besides resetting the Apple TV every so often and not setting up AirPlay 2?

I finally found a solution until Apple makes this a proper setting: Airplay can be accessed via Shortcuts app. When you do this, your phone directly controls the volume. Just go into Shortcuts, create a new shortcut and search for “airplay” to find and use it. Siri seems to have issues with it, but at least it can be placed on your Home Screen.

The only thing that seems to work for me is to use the older equipment to establish an Airplay 1 session. Do this by streaming through the old equipment. Then on your iPhone, switch the speaker to the new equipment. It should maintain the Airplay 1 protocol and you can keep volume adjustment.

However, if there is a glitch or if the iPhone thinks it knows better, it might still stop streaming and force you to “hand-off” using Airplay2. In this case, the music is playing on the other device and you can only control the song, not the volume, and you can’t use Siri to control it either.

This is so frustrating. I've found one workaround that works "most" of the time. I have several AppleTV 4K devices in my home, but I mostly like to stream music to the one connected to some speakers on my patio.

Since this issue started happening earlier this year, I've found that if I stream to a different AppleTV 4K first, then select my "Patio" Apple TV4K, then I can control the volume. This doesn't work 100% of the time, but does work most of the time.

This is extremely irritating though, and I'm giving up on Apple fixing it. I'm ordering a Sonos Port in hopes of solving this problem once and for all.

Apple - please fix this before you lose more users!

So I've been having this issue for a few months. I remember last year I was able to Airplay music from my iPhone to Apple TV and be able to control the volume.

Today I Airplayed music from Apple Music on iPhone to Apple TV and the handoff problem didn't occur. It worked as it used to and was able to turn volume up or down with iPhone physical buttons.

Then I paused the music, and when resumed, the handoff to Apple TV happened again and I wasn't able to control volume.

Now I've tried to stream music from my iPad Mini running iOS 12.4.7 and the Airplay function happens as expected, I am able to control volume and everything and now my iPhone's Music app has an Apple TV logo on the album cover.

I also tried disabling WiFi on iPhone and tried to Airplay and it worked fine, handoff didn't happen and I was able to control the volume from my phone. But then, when I tried to turn WiFi back on, it wouldn't work and had to go to settings, turn it off again and back on.

It might be an iOS 13 issue as I remember controlling the volume last year for a while.

Thank you so much @staticinspace !!

I've tried everything else on this thread with no reliable results. (iPad mini on 14.2 using to Apple TV 4K also on 14.2). I now have a 'Fix Airplay' shortcut on the home screen next to Apple Music shortcut, and it successfully rolls back the handoff, and volume control is back on iPad. (Don't even have to quit or reboot anything.)

Apple - why is it possible for the iPad to handoff to ATV when 'Handoff' is switched off in settings??

The only other method suggested in this thread that had (sporadic) success was to have music play on iPad, then quit app, then AirPlay to ATV before pressing play on anything. This only sometimes worked, and also sometimes required the ATV app to be quit.

I agree it’s the handoff causing the problem. When I open another music app and click an appletv in music, then I have volume. The volume level between appletvs is inconstant each time I use the app. I gather the reason the volume works with the other music app open is that the app defeats the handoff issue.

I ran into the same problem. Here is the solution I came up with. On your Apple TV go to SETTINGS, then AIRPLAY and HOMEKIT, scroll to ALLOW ACCESS....select ANYONE ON THE SAME NETWORK.....and....make sure ALSO ALLOW NEARBY TO AIRPLAY is ON.

This solution is a little less than ideal as you will now be able to control volume of your song playing on your iPad or iPhone using the volume control buttons on your device. HOWEVER, you will have to turn off your WiFi and make sure your Bluetooth is connected. Thus, the workaround is you are connecting to the Apple TV via Bluetooth. It is my experience that if you attempt to then connect to WiFi you will not be able to do so. You then have to close Apple Music and go to your devise settings and turn off then on WiFi and select your Network.

Controlling the volume from your Apple device was not a problem prior to the iOS 13 update.

Hope this helps.
