iphone freezes on "update Apple id settings"

I changed my Apple id password on my iphone 11 and then used new password on PC and ipad with no problems. However, iphone 11 allways shows a "1" next to "Update Apple id settings" and so I go to next window where the message is that some services require me to sign in again, so I hit "continue" and enter my new password. But nothing much happens except that the "activity" symbol just spins and spins. After a while screen turns black. I touch the screen and back to the spinning circle. . . .forever.
