they tell me that I have been sent a code to my phone number but obviously I dont have my phone and I am trying to find it.

You have to use anyone’s iPhone or even any laptop or desktop and just log into that and it will let you use find my phone like it’s you and you can see where your phone was and use the lost pho e options of turning it off, having it make noise or even post a message for anyone that has it

You can sign into iCloud without a code. When the box for the code appears, look below it and, if I recall, to the right. You'll see an option to log into Find My iPhone. It doesn't require the code.
