iOS Contact photo does not keep zoom cropping and shifts back to original

On the iPhone, when I pick a contact picture for my AppleID account, and I edit it within the app by zooming/cropping it and save, it does not keep the cropping. It looks like it worked, but when I close the app and return, the picture returns to its original zoom. It does not stay cropped.

Only way I've found to solve this is to create and crop an image outside of the iphone, save it to Photos and then select it from within the phone without modifying it.

This is the same problem outlined in 2014 and 6 years later it's still a problem.

I understand that when you edit a contact photo, specifically crop a photo, and then save it, it goes back to what it was before you cropped it. I am happy to help.
