I looked up this question but all the answers were from 2011. I was hoping for something more current to work with Catalina.
I tried all those steps from the previous thread with no success.
Any help would be appreciated.

Please use only app generated password when you configure your Yahoo mail using IMAP on Mail App on Catalina or on iOS devices. You yahoo mail password will be used only when you log into your Yahoo mail through a web browser.

Go to Settings/Passwords & Accounts. Tap on Add Account. Tap on Yahoo! Follow the on-screen instructions.
If you have 2 factor authentication on your Yahoo! email account you will need to generate an application specific password in your Yahoo! settings. That is what my associate was explaining. If you download the Yahoo! mail app and use it instead you don’t have to go through this process. The other benefit is the Yahoo! mail app supports push notifications; Yahoo! does not push to the Apple Mail app.
If you don’t use 2 factor authentication with Yahoo you shouldn’t need an app specific password.
And if you do one option is to install any Yahoo app on your phone; that app can then be used generate an authentication token when you add Yahoo mail to your Apple mail account. That’s how I just did it when I added my Yahoo email address to my phone. Yahoo has made it more complicated than it needs to be in their attempt to make it easier.

I don't see any drop down window of what you posted.
IDK what computer or version of iOS you are running but I don't see those options on Yahoo site.
Even the Yahoo icon is old and different.
I can't believe its sooooo complicated to switch over or creat a new IMAP Yahoo email account.
I even tried creating a brand new email address / account to no avail. Yahoo kept shutting me down saying "Too many attempts" then crashing. WTF sigh....

I've read and tried explanations on Yahoo and Apple Support.
All sorts of combinations.
I even saw Yahoo had a different server address than what I've seen posted ever where. I thought, great! maybe this is the reason it's not working. But Nooooo doesn't work.
I even tried a new mail app but same none success.

I don't use the Yahoo mail app. I use Apple Mail on my desktop and on my NEW iPhone 11 Pro.
I don't use 2 factor authentication. I've never seen ANY app specific password area or suggestion.
I don't want to use Yahoo specific app. I want to use my Apple Mail app.
Why would I want to have another window / app open to read my mail????

I am now doing the app specific password but am still getting wrong answers when I enter new app specific password.
So many new passwords sooo much confusion.... Jesus Christ! I thought i'd be simple. Just change a few parameters...
I am following all the steps and entering the "perceived" correct info. IDK why it still doesn't work????
I've created APP specific passwords for both my Mac Mail and iPhone Mail.
Every time i use them, it says incorrect.
I add my old password and it works.
Then I go in circles!
Please help.

I want to make my Mac Mail and my iPhone Mail capable of using IMAP.
Then why do I have to delete the same email on my phone and desktop?
I thought the whole idea of IMAP is that if you delete email in one place it's gone. Off the server.

I’m happy it’s resolved. Yahoo isn’t what it used to be. It was acquired by Verizon, who also acquired AOL, and they put AOL in charge of managing Yahoo mail. Here’s a useful site when you are having problems with a service: https://downdetector.com/status/yahoo-mail/
If you follow my instructions it will not ask anything about server addresses. Only your Yahoo email address and password. The rest happens as if by magic.

IMAP is the default for Yahoo mail, so if you set it up as I described that is what you will get.
Perhaps you should contact Yahoo.
