iOS 13 iPhone music app constantly crashing, causing freezes, phone getting hot

Apple music subscriber here.

Never had these problems until iOS 13 and iPhone XR. Right up until the XR I had an iPhone 8 Plus.

I recently bought an iPhone XR and right from the first day it was getting unacceptably hot and music app misbehaved (crashing, not playing music, carplay music not working).

Did a settings erase and still having the problems.

Took it to genius bar and did a hardware test (all ok) then turned off background app refresh for all apps. Still problems.

Did a factory reset. Still the problems.

Setup as new phone (no restore from backup). Still the problems.

Discovered that music app has background activity, even when phone is not in use (music app or otherwise). To the point that when I detected my phone getting hot I would note the battery use for the music app, ten minutes later it will have had an extra 10 mins background activity. A couple of times it will have had a few hours background activity.

The only remedy seemed to be to switch the phone off and on again, and sometimes that didn't even work.

Then it started happening to my wife's year-old iPhone 8 Plus. With severe battery drain.

Back in the genius bar, the music app was deleted and reinstalled from my new XR. Suggested that it could be the sync with my music library of over 15,000 songs that is causing the problem.

Left sync off for around 4 days. No problems.

Turned sync on. Problems started again after a few days.

Turned sync off again. The problems now occurred with sync off.

I've now turned sync on because my chosen playlists don't sync with my Apple Watch series 4 without sync on.

I'm out of ideas as to what is causing it and what to do. Any help is appreciated.

Incidentally, my wife's phone isn't linked to the same iCloud library as mine. Her library is probably less than 2,000 songs. She also uses Apple Music and has a series 4 Apple Watch.

Yes. I returned to the Apple store today to discuss the issues again.

After consulting with a number of people, they told me that it is a known issue and that it should be fixed by a software fix.

I have just updated to IOS13.3.1 — however, the release notes don’t make reference to this defect.

Fingers crossed that it is fixed before I switch to Spotify, or smash my phone out of frustration.

Let me know if this gets fixed for you!

Okay, the issue is back. So 13.3.1 didn't do anything.

On of the things that I have noticed is that when I go into the iTunes app, it also goes haywire.

It will continue to load, but in the bottom menu, I have noted that the tags on the icons change. eg. 'Movies' will change to 'Films' and continue to cycle back and forth. The same happens to the icon for 'TV Shows' which cycles to 'TV Programmes'.

I think there is something in the software which is changing what iTunes store you are connected to.

I have also have this issue with my iPhone XS.

I have tried all of the above also and it keeps doing the same thing.

I suspect that there is a software error / rogue process that is causing the CPU to heat up and drain the battery.

I when I took it to Apple, the guy did a diagnostic on it and said that there was a software issue. He suggested re-imaging and setting-up the phone from scratch. I think it worked okay for a short time -- until the next iOS release came out.

I'm at a point where the app is pretty much useless and I'm thinking about changing the family over to Spotify <shakes head>.

Sorry I don't have the answer -- but you do have another person that can sympathise with you.

Original Poster here. Wasn't noticeable for a few weeks but suddenly started up again like gangbusters. Seriously hot phone, apps freezing, music not working; carplay stuck on 'live streaming'. Happening on both my iPhone XR and my wife's iPhone 8 plus. Not happening on either of our non-cellular iPad Pros (2018).

It has happened when I'm at work or in the car, no wifi connection involved so it's not limited to switching between wifi and cellular. It has happened at home connected to wifi too, but funny things seem to happen and wifi connection on the phone may not be constant (I reckon that's another fault).

I'm at a loss. I've given up contacting Apple about it because short of replacing the phone with another one that will do exactly the same thing there's no point. It was just wasting my time. My guess is it's an iOS 13 thing, because it started when we upgraded (or in the case of my XR, from purchase date - where I upgraded it to 13 immediately).

Having this problem too and also have had prompts asking me to login to an appleID that isn't mine. Figured out I had songs in my library that had those appleid associated with it. I deleted them, but still get prompts asking me to login.

I thought this login issue and music overheating and slowing down my phone were related, but I'm not sure as you all have experienced the overheating and slow down part.

Every now and then I also getting prompts to log in to my Apple ID that was the email address that my current Apple ID used to be about five years ago (I’ve changed the email address - not the Apple ID - twice since then). It doesn’t accept my password. I just cancel it.

This usually happens after an update of some kind.

I didn’t consider it could be related because it is so infrequent.

i deleted the app, reinstalled it many time and yet the same thing happens. I even tried not syncing my library thinking that it could be a cloud problem but it never helped. It will be okay for awhile but it will crash again soon after.

sorry Apple but I switched to SPOTIFY already since there is no solution to this.

I will have to wait until I get my new mobile unit.

Exactly the same problem on an iPhone XS - tried all the same steps with Apple too. Only have about 1500 songs in iTunes in the Cloud. Have AirPods 2 and Beats Studio 3 Wireless and Watch 4 paired. It seems that the "Replay xxxx" (with xxxx being the year) playlist seems to be the most problematic but it does happen to all playlists. I often play on wifi and LTE and it makes no difference nor does downloading the music to the iPhone.

My issue happens with both WiFi and cellular.

I have identified that there this may be triggered by moving from WiFi to cellular and back. For instance, I can listen to music in my home on WiFi. However, when getting into my car, the music stops after a short time. I’m assuming that the application plays the buffered portion of the song then hangs. Having said this, I have had the application playing in the car on cellular — then hanging an hour into the trip.

I have also had the issue on WiFi though.

It works on my iPad well. So I have ended up pairing my car to my iPad and tethered the iPad to the to my phone. So it’s not the most intuitive solution for an apple product!
