Retaining iPhone Videos Date information when moved or renamed

I am Airdropping loads of videos from iPhone to Macbook Pro and then renaming them before transferring them to Dropbox.

The purpose is to delete the originals and create more space on the phone.

I would like to be able to rename the videos but not erase from the meta information of the ORIGINAL DATE when the video was shot.

Does moving them and renaming them lose this information?

PS Any workflow suggestions as to the best way of doing this would be appreciated. I dont use iCloud to back up photos and videos because the battery lasts much longer between recharges if you dont do this.

Hello musicspirit and welcome to Apple Support Communities.

I see you are trying to rename videos shot on your iPhone without changing the date and time that they were shot in the metadata associated with the video.

Add titles, descriptions, and more to photos using Photos on Mac - Apple Support

In order to change the date and time, you actually have to use the process outlined in that article. Just changing the name will not change other metadata.

Cheers.

thanks revbill for this helpful answer - though I realise it does not fully address my question which I should explain further. I understand now that this metadata is visible if looking at the photos or videos in iPhoto...

But it does not seem possible to view this data and therefore organise a desktop freestanding folder by original date of the video or photo material. When I put a selection of photos and videos in a discrete folder on the desktop the 'date created' dates are not the dates the photo or video was taken .. but the date they were transferred from my phone uploaded to dropbox or renamed.

I understand that this information would be available if I looked at the material in iPhoto app - but that is not an app I use much and it is less useful to me than having everything in a folder organised by date the photos or videos were actually first shot.

Is there a solution to this?

Hi musicspirit.

While date and time metadata for a photo is editable in the Photos app, the date created and date modified for files and folders in the Finder are not editable. As a workaround, you could try this:

1) Open the Photos app. From the sidebar on the left choose Photos under the Library setting and then the Days tab at the top of the window.

2) Choose a day. Click one photo from that day and then hold the Command key and click all of the photos you want in a new folder.

3) Under the File menu at the top of the screen, choose Export. You'll get options to either export the photos as you currently see them, or to export the unmodified originals. The difference here is that the unmodified option would discard any edits you may have made to the images in the Photos app.

4) A window with options will drop down. Don't change any of them. Just click the Export button.

5) You'll get a Finder window that will allow you to choose where the images will be exported to. In the lower left corner of that window, there is a button called New Folder. Navigate to where you want that new folder and then click New Folder.

6) Name the folder with the date or date range of the photos you are exporting (or any other way you want to organize) and click Export again.

You'll end up with a new folder with all of the images in it and the folder named according to your wishes. Be aware that doing it this way will create copies that will consume storage space. But if you prefer to organize your images outside of the Photos app, this is a good way to accomplish that.

Cheers.
