Using Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter to power Kingston Mobilelight G4 SD Card Reader - "cannot use accessory: requires too much power"

Hi all,

I recently bought an iPad (7th Gen) along with an SD Card Reader from Kingston. Since it needs power to run, I also got the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter, which has an power port along with an USB A-port.

However, when connecting the SD Card Reader, the iPad still won't use it due to it using too much power. At this point, I'm not really sure what else to do. The SD Card Reader should have all the power it needs.

I tried restarting, connecting the reader in different combinations, but still no dice.

I'm on the latest version of iPad OS. The SD Card is formatted with exFAT, and connects nicely to my desktop computer running Windows 10.

Thanks for any advise.

With Lightning connector equipt iPads, you are going to have to plug in external power into that Lightnjng to USB 3.0 adapter no matter what kind of external drive you are using.

The Lighting connector alone cannot convey enough power to the iPad to run pretty anything connected to it.

You will need to connect external power to that Lightning to USB 3.0 adapter for ANY external drive use!

The external power was plugged in. Or so I thought. The Kingston Mobilelight G4 SD Card Reader and the lightning cable doesn't fit perfectly along-side each other in the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter, but I believed it was just enough for them to fit.

Bought a short USB extension cable today to ensure enough room for the SD Card Reader, and it worked.

Thanks zmclearan and MichelPM.
