upgrading macbook air 2012 to catalina

Hello everyone, I am a brand new MacOS user and trying to figure stuff out. I've acquired an older macbook air 13 inch mid 2012 version and currently has Mountain Lion OS X on it 10.8.5 Tried to upgrade to the latest which is Catalina but i get a message saying i need OS X version 10.9 or later to get it. How can I complete this task?

When i open software updates, i keep getting an error when trying to download update for ITunes, says error downloading 102 or something like that. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Please keep in mind i am a newbie with mac OS..

See the instructions in How to upgrade to macOS Catalina - Apple Support

Note the following from that link:

* To upgrade from Lion or Mountain Lion, first upgrade to El Capitan, then upgrade to Catalina. To find your macOS version, Mac model, memory, and storage space, choose About This Mac from the Apple menu . If your Mac isn't compatible with macOS Catalina, the installer will let you know. View the complete list of compatible computers.
