Mac mini (2018) start-up monitor issues

I have a Mac mini (2018) with the 3.2ghz 6-Core i7, integrated graphics, etc. My monitor is a LG 27UK650-W bought at the same time. I have posted on this before, but have since gone through a number of trials to figure the issue out, and wanted to re-post with more information.

The initial problem: At some point, I don't know exactly when other than months after the purchase, I began to have an issue where when I would power the computer off and return some time later to turn back on you could see the light at the front of the computer turn on and the machine was clearly on, but the monitor would be blank. I would try the PRAM/NVRAM reset and what have you but it only worked after a series of forced resets. When waking from sleep it was fine, but often a restart would trigger the problem and certainly shutting it off. Eventually, no amount of resetting could fix it so I took it into the Apple store a couple of months ago.

Apple resolution: After tests were done, Apple confirmed the logic board was out and because it was within a year of purchase they replaced and repaired free of charge. In doing so, my computer was wiped clean and reset which was fine because I figured it further cleared any issues that may be getting in the way. I brought my computer home, booted it up and it was fine and I figured it was fixed.

The recurring problem: At one point I was going out of town and had shut my now fixed computer down. When I returned, the same thing started happening. I couldn't get it to work, and it was the same as before where the computer would come on but the monitor would not come on so I could see what was going on. So I took it back into Apple right away given it was hardly a month after repair. After tests and looking at it they actually found there was no issues even after trying a number of monitors and/or TVs. So I said maybe it was me and took it home.

The problem continues to occur after bringing it home. There was one interesting thing I did notice however, and maybe it was just coincidence. But when my computer would again not work, I would turn it off, take it into my living room and plug it into my TV where I would use my Apple TV power cord and HDMI, and the computer would show on the screen. Then, when I would shut it down and take it back to my desk and plug into the monitor it would work.

Additional information: I have a Logitech keyboard and mouse, but also got a wired Apple keyboard so that doing the SMC reset, etc. is possible even if the wireless setup isn't working. I also have a PC connected to the second HDMI port, and never have any issues with that display working. I have even switched the HDMI ports to make sure it isn't a port issue, and switched HDMI cables around to a series of different ones to make sure it is not a cable issue. I have upgraded Mac OS and kept everything updated, the computer is mounted with plenty of air space around it, and I have even made sure to only use the USB-C ports as one post postulated there could possibly be interference created by some design of the USB ports. (I was going to try everything)

What I would like to know: I have read a number of posts about issues with the Mac mini and display devices. But I can't seem to find any that result in a resolution. So anything anyone possibly has to resolve this issue, any advice on perhaps certain HDMI cords that work but others that don't, any thoughts on perhaps the monitor I have for some reason being one that doesn't work with the Mac mini well, any suggestions for how to go around the problem and not reset my computer all the time, or just any possible thing at all would be great. I feel weird if its something with the monitor when it works well sometimes, and always works well on my PC connected to the other port, and the monitor overall seems to have great reviews and notes of people using it with the Mac mini. My only option now really is taking everything to the Apple store for a third time with my monitor and all cords and just be told they don't know.

Any direction here is helpful. Thank you.

Not to my knowledge, hopefully forum expert Michael Black will pitch in as he has in-depth knowledge on the caveats of the DisplayPort connection (the dongle mainly).

As for why the TV exhibited better behavior upon startup, maybe problems would surface later, who knows. They are totally different animals not to mention different makes, as long as it’s not the display of interest their different behavior really not of interest in your situation.

Finally, as for 4K HDMI on the mini, it’s *my* theory that the Apple spec re: HDMI 2.0 which native 4K requires, is not all what it claims to be i.e. closer to HDMI 1.4 which supports 4K at not greater that 30Hz. The good news however, is that 4K is overkill for most monitors under 30”. So one last option for flawless HDMI in your case is to step down the display resolution to 4K@30Hz or even better 2560x1440 at 60 Hz. You shouldn’t notice a blink.

In short, give the HDMI a shot with the above suggestions, there’s more than a good chance one of them will work completely to your satisfaction (priceless). For everything else, there’s DisplayPort. Good luck and look forward to your updates.

The mini’s support for native 4K HDMI is suspect imo, better to use DisplayPort. Be sure to enable DP 1.2 from the LG’s OSD, additionally turn HDMI ULTRA HD Deep Color, Smart Energy and Automatic Standby off.

You could also try existing HDMI with the above settings but if it doesn’t improve/fix, best to move to USB C-DisplayPort. Good luck.

Thank you for that, marked as helpful and will keep you posted on results.

I seem to hear some exclaiming that you need one device plugged into HDMI to work properly. But you’re saying even if I have no HDMI connection to the mini, and all I have is a USB-C to display port of one monitor it should work?

Also, any thoughts on anything lost going from HDMI to display port? Any reason why it might be flaky with my 4K monitor but boot on my 4K TV just fine?

Again appreciate it and will certainly give this a try. I have been really disappointed with having to deal with this.

Have been reading and researching the this issue of no video via thunderboldt 3 usb-c on wake for 2018 Mini....

I have the following configuration and have this monitor not showing video after sleep issue effecting me.

Mac Mini USB-C thunderbolt 3 cable ---> Blackmagic egpu pro USB-C----> LG 34WK95U-W USB-C

For those who have experimented a bit with this issue, is it a good option to leave this connection in place and then add the following conncetion...

Blackmagic egpu pro Dispalyport----> LG34WU95 Displayport and choosing Displayport for input at 1.2 setting?

If doing so, then will I still have thunderbolt 3 pass through to LG monitors other usb ports even if not selecting thunderbolt 3 as the input on monitor but is connected ?

Not sure if using displayport from eGPU will solve this issue of video not appearing after sleep or logout.

Thank you for the thoughts in getting this fixed. Good news is I believe it is now fixed and seems to be working well.

I tried your advice on settings first with the HDMI already plugged in. It continued to have issues and at points was even flickering when it worked. Not sure why but the situation seems to have gotten worse over time, even after Apple replaced the logic board for an apparently separate issue.

Next I purchased a USB-C to DisplayPort cable from Amazon. This, along with the settings recommendations that you posted above, has been the solution I needed. I tried shutting my Mac mini down for short and prolonged periods, and it boots fine when I return. I also tried sleep and wake at different times and again seems to work just fine. All in all my Mac mini now boots up just fine and activates the display as desired so thank you for the time providing viable solutions. Apple should really spend time with this as it appears there are many out there having troubles with the Mini and 4K setups. Its lame they couldn't figure this out in the store.

I wouldn’t blame the store people, they’re only trained to assist with standard issues and obvious problems. Sort of like AI with a human touch. This problem has more to do with a still-evolving HDMI 2 spec and resolution that’s not supported by Intel, not fully-understood by Apple and an overkill for the bulk of monitor users. Fact is, in Apple’s world, both HDMI and DisplayPort are problem children. They’ve ditched them both, so what we’re left with are half-solutions from Apple Engineering with the obligatory fudges from Apple Marketing.

Who cares! Your solutions works, that’s the important thing. Season’s Greetings!
