Notifications directly to hearing aids No longer work

My husbands Oticon hearing aids are no longer receiving ringer and message notifications from his iPhone. His phone calls still go to his hearing aids but not the ringer or notification sounds. This function worked wonderfully before an iOS update about a month ago. 

we contacted Oticon and the said that Apple no longer offers the option to receive alerts for text message, email etc. in Oticon Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) hearing devices. I can’t understand why the would make this change. Now my husband doesn’t even know his phone is ringing or that he has a message.

are others experiencing this? How can we let Apple know what a mistake this is?
