iPhone in cold weather

I have a 10 Max. During a recent trip I was exposed to temps between 32 and 14 F (0 - -10 C).

In many instances I was unable to take pictures because the screen would not respond to my finger.

Was my finger too cold or does the 10 Max not fully operate at these temps. I will soon travel in a region with even lower temps. Can I take my iPhone or should I stick to a regular digital camera?

Will it help if I use the side sound button instead of the screen to click a picture?

Thank you cold-weather friends for helping me out
