after the 3 beeps has gone, when i press power button, my macbook air still doesnt power on

Why did my MacBook Air go black and started beeping? While in use and attached to power my MacBook Air went blank and immediately after started beeping a slow sequence of 3 beeps. I powered it off, waited a moment and powered it back on and it started beeping immediately the same way. What’s happening?
