Hello jamieson29,

Thanks for asking the Apple Support Communities for help with strange sounds with your AirPods.

Is this only occurring in a specific area? Please check this article to see if this is cause by interface and if the issue is occurring in different areas: Resolve Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues caused by wireless interference - Apple Support

This article also has some other troubleshooting to go though: If the sound from your wireless headphones cuts out or is distorted - Apple Support

If you need more help, 'Forget' your AirPods in Bluetooth settings on your iPhone, then reset and re-pair them using the steps here: Reset your AirPods - Apple Support

If you still have problems, please check this info:

  • Make sure you are using the AirPods while close to the device they're connected to.
  • Is this occurring on calls, playing content already synced or downloaded to their device, or if it's streaming content, are you using Wi-Fi or cellular?
  • If streaming, please test with downloaded content to rule out connectivity issues related to streaming.
  • Check for sources of nearby interference, in the article above, like other Bluetooth or wireless devices. When using AirPods in a crowd or in areas where multiple Bluetooth or wireless devices are in use, may cause interference.
  • An iPhone case might affect signal strength. If the iPhone has a case, try removing it and position the iPhone with minimal body interference, close to the AirPods, and not in a bag, purse, or pocket.

Thanks and have a wonderful day.
