How do I enable an external SSH/HDD ?

MacBook Pro 13", OS X 10.11

I assume you mean SSD (Solid State Disk) and not ssh (Secure SHell)


Generally you just plug them in. If they are not formatted for the Mac, you are generally asked to format it. But you have not given enough information about what you want to do with this external disk.
