Midi controller won't connect to MacBook

I am attempting to connect a Yamaha YPG-235 to my MacBook Pro so that I can use it as a midi controller in GarageBand. I have installed and uninstalled the drivers multiple times, and I have tested the input in many ways. Whenever I plug it in, the MIDI setup application and GarageBand won't recognize a new input. No matter what I do it seems that this keyboard won't connect to my computer. I have successfully connected a USB audio interface and used it in GarageBand, but my midi controller won't work. Is it possible that the drivers don't work or that this keyboard isn't compatible with my computer?

Hey there, Hmburcham!

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities. I understand that you're trying to use a Yamaha YPG-235 keyboard with your MacBook Pro, but it isn't being recognized in the Audio/Midi settings or in GarageBand. I'm happy to help!

I see you have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers already, which is great. Make sure you're using the most recent Yamaha drivers for macOS 10.15 to start, which you can get directly from Yamaha here: USB-MIDI Driver V1.3.2-2 for Mac macOS 10.15-OS X 10.5 - Yamaha - United States.

If that doesn't solve the problem, I can recommend seeing if the issue continues in safe mode: Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support, and a new, test user: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac - Apple Support. These steps will help us figure out if the issue is specific to your user account and the software and settings you have within it, or if it's occurring on a system-wide basis. Each article will give instructions on how to perform the steps, and what to do with your results.
