Cursor stuck on primary monitor

I have an external monitor connected to my MacBook Pro - The external is set as the primary monitor. Occasionally the pointer stops at the edge of the primary monitor and will not move to the MacBook Pro. I can fix this in preferences by changing the primary monitor to the MacBook Pro and then back to the external monitor. After I do this the pointer will move between monitors. However, it will go back to the same problem. Not a big deal but wondering if there is a real fix

MacBook Pro 13", OS X 10.11

Good day, rkstiens!

Thank you for visiting the Apple Support Communities. As I understand it, your cursor doesn’t always move fluidly between your displays. I’m happy to lend a hand.

I recommend that you ensure that your display arrangement is set correctly in System Preferences > Display > Arrangement. You may need to slightly move one display in order to ensure that your cursor will move as expected.

I hope this helps.
