I am trying to pair my new apple watch with iphone 6 but keep getting message to update my i phone but ios is updated to the latest ios

The current shipping Apple Watch Series 3 and 5 models come with watchOS 6 that requires an iPhone 6s, SE, 7 or newer running iOS 13. The iPhone 6 cannot be upgraded to iOS 13. I suggest you return your Apple Watch for a refund.
