Your free one year subscription is for Apple TV +

Apple TV + is Apple Original content. It’s a channel found within the Apple TV App. The shows included in your subscription will have the tv+ logo on them - those are free.

About Apple TV+ - Apple Support

Movies that say rent or buy are from the iTunes Store and not free.

This is not like Netflix etc, where all is included in the one App. Nowhere does it state you have access to the entire iTunes catalogue. Those movies are owned and sold by the Film Producers or whoever owns the rights to them, which is not Apple.

It’s laughable that people don’t read about what Apple TV+ is before spouting nonsense. Apple TV+ is NOT a subscription that allows free access to anything you find on the Apple TV app. Apple TV+ is all Apple original content only. You find that content by clicking on the black Apple TV+ icon under Watch Now. Apple TV+ content is free to subscribers and contains award winning movies, documentaries, ongoing series, ALL produced by Apple itself. Here’s the info:

Apple TV - The hardware box connected to a HDTV.

Apple TV app - The app that aggregates all content from Apple and other sources like Netflix, Peacock, Amazon Prime, HBO Max, etc., and Apple TV+.

Apple TV+ - Original, exclusive content produced by Apple and free with the Apple TV+ subscription.

So launch the Apple TV app, click on Watch Now, scroll down to the black Apple TV+ icon and click. Now watch anything you find there for free with your subscription. It’s so easy it’s laughable.

Open the Apple TV app (or TV app on a Mac), select Watch Now from the top menu. Now scroll down and click on the black AppleTV+ icon. Anything you find there is part of your Apple TV+ subscription.

If you have an Apple TV streaming box running the latest tvOS version there is now an Apple TV+ tab on the top menu of the Apple TV app.

We acknowledge it’s not easy for some. The instructions need to be followed, update the software and sign in with the same Apple ID you activated the new qualifying device on. It’s tied into your Apple ID. Once you set up your new device and set up is complete, Apple knows this was done. Then you are eligible for the free year. You have 90 days to claim it after activating the new device.

Here’s how to redeem it:

Turn on your new Apple device and sign in with your Apple ID

Open the Apple TV app. Make sure your device is running the latest version of iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, or macOS.

The offer should be presented immediately after launching the app. If not, go to the Apple TV+ channel page, signed in, where you’ll see the offer.

Tap Enjoy 1 Year Free.

Those are available within Apple TV Plus, by scrolling down to "Available Apple TV Channels' and selecting the Apple TV Plus icon. That is the same section where one would have initially gone to claim the 12 month offer.

What you are doing is browsing through the TV app, which also houses content from the iTunes store for rental/purchase. The TV app was available long before Apple TV Plus and has content available from many providers.

There is no scam and nothing whatsoever that is misleading as everything is clearly advertised and laid out. The offer is for Apple TV Plus and that is exactly what users have access to.

Wrong. The service is clearly marketed for Apple originals, and the offer is for that. In order to claim said offer one has to go into the distinct section, where they will see exactly what is included. It is for Apple TV Plus and not the TV app. The app was available long before the service and those shows would be from iTunes, which are not part of a subscription service but rather being purchased to own from that digital storefront.

In fact Amazon's app works very similarly.

If you read what Apple TV + includes, it say Apple originals

You weren’t misled, you misunderstood.

Your subscription is for Apple TV +

Apple TV + is Apple Original content. It’s a channel found within the Apple TV App. The shows included in your subscription will have the tv+ logo on them - those are free with your subscription

What is Apple TV+ and what do I get with it?

  • Apple TV+ is an all-new streaming service from Apple. Watch original shows and films, ad-free and on demand, in 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos sound.

Nowhere does it say this includes iTunes movies or TV Shows, other channels, etc which are not owned by Apple to be giving away for free. Apple TV hosts other services as well as their own TV Plus. These are high quality shows.

Because this wasn’t done automatically. You were required to redeem the offer yourselves to activate the free trial.

If you haven’t done so and are still within the 90 period from your device activation date (when you set it up), you can do so now - follow the instructions:

The other charges are for something else, you can  view, change, or cancel your subscriptions to see what it is for and cancel those, if you wish and check your purchase history

You are welcome. I’ve posted something else a few times so I’ll repeat it again.

1 Apple TV, the hardware. Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K are the hardware boxes themselves.

2 Apple TV, the App. The Apple TV app gathers and aggregates content from other sources like HBO, Netflix, CBS, Peacock, Apple TV+, etc. You can search for content using the Apple TV App. The Apple TV App is NOT Apple TV+.

3 Apple TV+, the subscription service. Apple TV+ is Apple’s original content streaming service. Apple TV+ is what you get a free 1 year subscription to when you purchase a qualifying Apple product. It contains only original content produced by or licensed by Apple itself. There are movies, series, documentaries that you will find only on Apple TV+, nowhere else. Apple TV+ content is like Amazon Originals, Netflix Originals, HBO Originals. For example, the movie Greyhound starring Tom Hanks was released solely on Apple TV+

So when someone posts that they have a free Apple TV subscription they are simply wrong because there is NO such thing as an Apple TV subscription. There is only an Apple TV+ subscription which does NOT include any and all content you can find.

That some make assumptions based on their misunderstanding of what they are subscribing to is on them, not Apple or the ‘fine print’. Apple is not falsely advertising the Apple TV+ service, not misleading subscribers, not pulling the wool over customer’s eyes.

Thanks for response however I’m unable to access on my phone? Just tells me to purchase or rent. No offer of free movies. So until I can achieve that basic stage-I’ve no chance if streaming?
why is it so complicated to people like me who are not top notch IT savvy?

Perhaps you made a common assumption that an Apple TV+ subscription allows free access to any and all content you find in the Apple TV App. That is incorrect. Apple TV+ is a subscription service that contains Apple original content only, nothing else. You access Apple TV+ content by clicking on the black Apple TV+ icon under the Watch Now tab. All content within the Apple TV+ channel is included with your subscription.

May 8, 2020 6:53 AM in response to Oxi-gen

You only get free access to Apple TV+, which is a streaming service of only Apple’s content.

About 10 shows and 5 movies.

Everything else in the app is from other streaming service providers like HBO and costs money because Apple can’t give it away for free because it’s not on their streaming service. Why they include it in the Apple TV app?🤷‍♂️💵.

If you bought a new Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, iPod Touch from Apple or an authorized reseller then you would be entitled to the offer for Apple TV Plus (service for Apple originals). The only ones who wouldn't qualify would be those who purchased refurbished or open box from other sellers or those who had previously subscribed to Apple's service. The offer itself is valid for 3 months after device activation and only counts towards the first qualifying purchase by an individual or member of a family sharing group. Those are clearly detailed in the terms, and are standard. In rare instances the offer may not come up when one does qualify, and in that instance they simply need to contact Apple to get a code in order to redeem. Nothing misleading whatsoever.

Everything I have stated is based on facts, however those responding on this thread are using assumptions and false information to continue their flawed narrative regarding this offer and service. You can continue to believe what you wish, however I will remind you that this is a user forum for helping with technical issues. If the thread continues to devolve into a ranting session then I'm sure the moderators will intervene.

$7.99 USD would not be for Apple TV+, but for something else. Possibly one of the other Apple TV app Channels (e.g. Nick Hits $7.99, Noggin $7.99). Or a different product or service from a different app.
