My grandson input some Itunes gift cards but they wouldn't work until a payment method other than the gift card was registered. Why is this? His account showed $50 balance but it would not allow purchases until a credit card was entered.

It's an existing account that had no payment method associated with it. We entered the gift cards, it recorded them and showed the proper balance but would not allow a purchase without another payment method entered.
We entered a credit card for payment so the problem is resolved. However, with the $50 gift card showing as available, when you purchased an item it said to enter a valid payment method or something to that effect, even though it showed the $50 as available. After we entered the credit card, it allowed the purchase and deducted from the gift card balance. We will just pul the CC after the gift card is used.
What happens ? What is the text of the message/prompt that shows ?
