change of ownership

I was given an older MacBook Air from a family member. It still has all the info of the original owner. How do I change the ownership if I don't know any of their passwords? I can log into my Apple ID, but anytime I try to do updates it ask for their password which I don't have. What can I do?

You need to restore it to factory settings: Factory reset your Mac - Apple Support.
