How to factory reset iPod nano 8th generation (Model MKN02LL or Model A1446)

Hello Apple Community,

Thank you for your help with this matter. I have been trying to factory reset this unit with no success (for my elderly father) and wondering if others have experienced issues?

This is a blue iPod nano that I believe is 8th generation. In its "About" menu it shows the model to be MKN02LL. On the back of the case, it shows Model A1446. It has the headphone jack on the bottom of the unit (same surface as the lightning jack, and opposite side of the unit from the "Power" button).

Oddly, it seems most pictures show the headphone jack at the top of 7th/8th generation nanos.

I have tried different combinations of holding down buttons - it gives the spinning wheel and apple icon, but then just restarts normally without providing any additional menus.

I've also tried connecting the nano to a computer to try to "restore" - however, any option that seems like it could "restore" the device is faded out and cannot be clicked.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Apple Community.
