Splitting up Apple ID & iCloud

My husband and I have shared the same Apple ID for 10 years, we also have an iCloud account which only he backs up to. We’re both upgrading to new phones, and I’d like to split it up so we can both backup with out merging all our data (we have a business and he has 1000 contacts that I don’t need 😬) what’s the best way to set it up so neither of us loose any contacts, photos, messages, music/apps. As he is using the iCloud I assume it’s probably easier for him to keep the original account and I’d setup another. And.. can you run 2 apple ids/iCloud/iTunes accounts on the one computer?

Thanks in advance

When changing to the new ID, there may be some data loss, but you can minimize it. If syncing photos with iCloud, ensure Optimization is turned off in Settings/Your Name/iCloud/Photos and/or in Photos/Preferences/iCloud. Then make sure full resolution photos are on the device/computer. When signing out of iCloud, if asked whether you want to retain data, choose yes. Messages conversations will be lost if they are addressed to the ID. See the article below for other places that the old ID should be removed. See Winston Churchill's response in the below discussion. Also set up Family Sharing to keep access to your apps/purchases.

The easiest way to run 2 Apple IDs on one computer is to go to System Preferences/Users & Groups and create a new user account so that you each have your own account. That will keep, your data separate.
