Learned Remote & Voiceover

I bought an AppleTV for my blind parents to use, it’s the 4K version so the touch remote is useless to them. I trained a standard remote which worked fine and all the bottom recognised, but as soon as I turn on Voiceover the left and right buttons on the remote no longer work and just beep. The left button seems to return the focus to the first item and the right button losses focus on whatever is selected. As soon as voiceover is turned off it functions as usual. I’ve tried 4 different remotes all with the same issue although the touch remote still works as expected. Is there any workaround for this issue?

You might need to put VoiceOver in either direct touch or follow focus mode to work properly with your universal remote. You can do this using the rotor.

Take 2 fingers and place them on the Siri remote, and then twist them as if you were turning a dial. Continue to do this until you get to Follow Focus. Once you are on the follow focus rotor, your remote should work as you'd expect.
