I am having the same error.

I got my 16" MacBook Pro a week ago and it worked fine for one day when it was connected to a charger. But if I close the lid and open it up in a couple of hours (I assume after the MacBook has gone from sleep to hibernation) it always does a cold boot. After I insert the password, I get a black screen and all the fans got 100% for one second. Then it boots again, I insert the password and I get logged in. I always get a crash report from the OS.

Back when I had 10.5.1 it was a kernel panic and said something about the CPU related setPowerState() function failing. I saved all these reports into files, but then one day the MacBook went into an endless boot loop and I had to reinstall the OS. That's when I lost 8 of these reports that I had stored on the disk.

Now with 10.5.2 I've only been getting GPU panic reports. Most of them have said "PowerPlay Failed Resume" and I was surprised that I found zero Google results with that exact text. Today I got my first "PowerPlay Failed to Initialize" and was able to find this forum thread with it.

I will be sending this unit back to Apple as I believe it to be a hardware issue. I've had problems with 10.5.1 and 10.5.2. I did a clean install of 10.5.2 and got the crash report even right after finishing the setup. I believe it's either in the CPU, GPU or the logic board.

I'll write here when I hear what they did to the MacBook in repairs.

P.S. During writing this post the MacBook did a sudden cold reboot while it was just on idle on the desk next to me. When I got to the desktop I got another "PowerPlay Failed Resume" but the system was also very unresponsive. I was unable to copy the full report to TextEdit or even press the "Send" button on the report. Mouse stopped moving. A minute later a black screen, 1 second of 100% fan noise and another cold reboot.

We don't yet know it is specific to the 16" MBP. ChazThePhoenix is running Catalina, which we are as well. If we can show this affecting other devices, we can likely rule out hardware.

Chaz, next time it does it, post the error log that pops up when you restart and asks you to report. If the same or similar, we are closer to finding the problem.

Yep. That reproduced it. Interestingly I am not seeing PowerPlay in the problem report log this time. But still have IOGraphicsFamily and AMDRadeonX6000 showing up in the extension backtrace.

I had auto gfx switching off, which seemed to help earlier but apparently that didn't fix it. At least I know how to trigger it now for when I inevitably take this to the store.

This is not software. After 3 weeks of working with an Apple customer service rep and doing everything under the sun, we finally had it shipped to Apple. They fixed it in a day and are currently shipping it back. It is definitely a hardware problem as confirmed by my support engineer and Apple knows about it very well.

THIS IS NOT SOFTWARE AND IT WONT BE FIXED BY A SOFTWARE UPDATE. <---- READ

If you have the GPU panic problem, contact Apple as you have a warranty and have them fix it. Don't wait, because if your warranty runs out and you don't have Applecare, then its on you.

As soon as I get the detailed problem and official hardware fix, I will report back. But at this stage, this is a confirmed hardware problem and can be fixed only by Apple.

Interesting today I open it up - never sure what to expect - and I get a different error "Sleep Wake failure in EFI". Seen various reports, some resolved with SMC reset (tried it), some turning off standby (don't want to disable features if I'm under warranty), and then the logic board failing.

I agree though, it's better to just format it, take it in, and hope they fix it with a hardware swap or replacement. Barely a week old, and I already have to give it up for who knows how long.

I'm on my 3rd, and with 10.15.3 still experiencing all sorts of freezes and restarts.

Each replacement took 2 weeks as I have a custom build!

Having the equivalent of a refurbished laptop through a logic board replacement only a month after purchase is ridiculous for the price.

My solution now is to wait, the current model with hardware issues is the "Late 2019", so I am waiting for the "Early 2020" model to be released. Then I am using 1 of my 2 'accidental damage' claims to swap the Late 2019 for an Early 2020, I'll have to pay $150 excess, but it's the quickest way out of an infinite loop of bad hardware.

Following Applecare guidelines just sees my $500 Applecare used as an excuse to talk to Apple at length about how there is nothing wrong and why I should reformat my 3rd replacement machine in under 2 months.

philux, this is the MBP 16" you've had out for repairs?

Possible solution (need more tests)

I disabled standby, did the Chrome YouTube HD video test twice, and it woke like normal both times. I'm going to try it overnight and see how that goes. Looks promising. This + a few users still having the problem after an Apple hardware replacement would likely mean the issue is software-related, likely Catalina.

If others want to try: Open Terminal, type: sudo pmset -a standby 0 and then your account password.

To revert the change, just change the 0 to a 1. You can check if it's off or on with: pmset -g

Doing all these tweaks makes the system unsuitable for work. Things like standby enable me to shut the lid after a meeting and save things later risk free.

If it doesn't work with the supplied system, it's not ready for production. Since I've purchased it, I'll return it every 30 days to stay covered by Australian consumer law until by all accounts I look like a professional using a machine with a Pro tag.

"Solution" was probably the wrong word there. I just spent a lot of money on this, so I'm not going to accept turning off a feature, "crippling" the machine as a resolution to this. But to me it implies this specific issue isn't the typical needs a new logic board/GPU hardware failure. And sending this in isn't likely to fix it. Or at least I haven't yet seen evidence that it does. But I have seen enough people claim it hasn't that I'm moving towards the sleep/wake crashing being Catalina related.

That said, I haven't so far experienced any noticeable effects from having standby off. There is still a sleep/low power mechanism built in. I came back to 100% charge with the laptop closed for a few hours, and it woke up like normal. Standby supposedly doesn't even kick in until at least 3 hours in idle sleep - which makes this working for me even more confusing.

The amount of time you're going to be without the computer from the constant exchanges surely isn't worth it. I suppose replacing it with a newer model is an option. But that ended up costing you how much more in the end? Applecare+ and then the deductible.

By today, I got my 2nd replacement both had the same issue or similar . I purchased the first Macbook Pro 15 inch , Max specs in May 2019 and I started experiencing crashes a week after and it kept getting more frequent. it took Apple till Nov to believe me and finally give me a new one. I got the 1 replacement in Nov 2019 and went about my business and Today 02/07/2020 , the first replacement keep restarting and crashing . I took it to the apple store and it did it in front of them and they gave me a new replacement.

I'm currently on 2nd replacement and hoping not to ever go back to the Apple store again and deal with this. I been a Mac user since 1997 and I never doubted their reliability but now days after Steve Job passed away things are just not the same quality as they use to be.
