Snow Leopard in VMware Fusion

I'm told that in order to create a virtual machine of OS 10.6 in Fusion, you have to use OS X Server 10.6 due to licensing restrictions. I own a disk of OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard. Can someone explain to me why I can't use that since I've already paid for the license?

I realize it's only $19.99 for the server version but I shouldn't have to buy that when I already have the other.

Thanks.

The only explanation I know is "because Apple says so".

But I am curious ... who is so generous to sell SL Server for the original price of $20? Since Apple Inc stopped making it the sealed (even light-use unsealed) sets are going for as high as $250.

Hint for installing the SL Server ... I always had to use the "PIIX3" option of "chipset" when specifying settings for the VM in VirtualBox.

Thanks for the reply. The $20 I read somewhere - possibly in one of these forums. Someone said don't buy it from a 3rd party because you can still buy the download from the Apple Store. I didn't check if that's right or not. Maybe not. If it costs more than that it's not worth it. I was hoping to run it on my new MBPro because there are a few old programs I can only use on my older (but still fully functional) 2008 MBPro.

It would be so much easier if I could simply make a virtual machine from the old Mac's drive.

More thoughts to help ...

Do NOT use any "only download". Those are usually as crooked as a 3-dollar bill, filled with many fun viruses and trojans. Get real disks.

There are also "evaluation versions" that are not the normal "unlimited license" version. I would stick with the full-power Apple-official.

SL Server does NOT come with iLife apps. You will need to update a couple of times (3 I think) until it does not update any more before the iLife disk that came with SL "normal" will install in the VM.
