There are purchased items on the iPad error message

I received a message that a new update is available. When I try to install the update, I receive the error message "There are purchased items on the iPad "iPad" that have not been transferred to your iTunes library. You should transfer these items to your iTunes library before updating this iPad. Are you sure you want to continue?"

I have tried to manually do the transfer by right clicking on the device and selecting "Transfer Purchased" as well as selecting File->Transfer purchases from this iPad. I have validated that this computer is authorized to my iTunes account.

I do not want to lose purchases from the iPad....

Anyone know where to go from here?

Once purchased, you can always redownload an app for free, so you won't lose them whatever you do

It is a huge failure on Apple's part that this has been a problem for 3 years now. I am trying to upgrade from iOS 6.0 to 6.1 and I am getting this cryptic failure. Apple has completely redesigned iTunes so that none of the internet's suggestions of what to right-click and click are valid. Yet, in all of their redesigning and rewriting, they have not added a button to the error message that would take you to the solution.

Apple, instead of having 2 buttons, Cancel and Continue, you should have 3 buttons, Cancel, Transfer, and Continue. Then you would save your customers thousands of hours of wasted time.

The solution to this is to use the menu option [File][Devices][Transfer Purchases] from the iTunes menu bar.

I find it so frustrating, and so typical, that Apple will put out an error message without bothering to explain, in the message, how to overcome the problem!

If you don't have the menu enabled may I recommend it. Hold the [CTRL] key and click B on your keyboard to see the menu.
