Ipad Pro (2018) and Apple pencil problems

My apple pencil connects to my ipad pro 11 inch when it is magnetically attached but once I take it off the ipad, the pencil disconnects. I've tried restarting the ipad and reconnecting the pencil but the same problem seems to appear.
