After upgrading to Catalina and to .2 my machine has a number of issues

One is the apple-about my mac -storage does not respond.

As well I see a process that eats the CPU

Hi scalablepower,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities! I see you're having an issue with your Mac and accessing the Storage info, and I'd like to help out.

The inability to access About this Mac > Storage and the process you described look to be related.

Before doing any troubleshooting, you'll want to make sure you have your Mac backed up. Back up your Mac

Start up your Mac in safe mode, as that will do some system checks and can fix some issues. Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

Keep in mind, that safe mode may take much longer to start up, as it runs though its system checks. Plus, you may notice some display differences, such as lines or flashing. This is all expected, and will go back to normal once restarted.

Check if you can access About this Mac > Storage while in safe mode, and again after restarting normally.

If you're still having issues, the next step is to start up in macOS Recovery. About macOS Recovery

Select Disk Utility and run First Aid. If something was found and repaired, then restart normally and test.

If nothing was found, then select to Reinstall macOS, without erasing your Mac.

If you are still not able to resolve the issue, then I'd recommend contacting Apple Support.

Take care!

I finally went to the Apple Store and Genius Bar.

There they told me that they recommended NOT upgrading to Catalina for earlier (like my mid 2012 Macbook Pro) machines.

But, while I was there, they wiped my hard drive and reinstalled catalina .2

It took 2 hours for my backup to restore; then an additional 3+ hours to sync with external cloud resources....

Then each time an application started, it had to be verified - so I blew a day of work doing all this.

But after that, it has now been 3 days and the machine seems to no longer have the tragic symptoms it had before - I have not had to reboot for 3 days.

Catalina does seem stable, though slower on this 16GB I5 machine - but it does function after rebuilding it from scratch.

Actually ALL of the steps you have listed have already been done on my machine by working with Apple Support.

The problem occurs in safe mode as well...

In fact these are all the steps I have done one or more times.

reloaded the OS

loaded an update

clear NVRAM

run disk utility repair - it was clean - ran again without the OS running and it was still clean.

run in stand alone mode - happens there too

confirm this happens with a new user

run the diagnostic package on boot and repair the drive and repair the boot (no errors)

run from reboot loading software across the internet to check the equipment (no problems found)

reset the system management controller

removed new memory and did all the above again (problem remains)

I did learn a lot of new diagnostic keystrokes from all these exercises, but it did burn a lot of time.

I guess my next step is to head to the Apple store. Apple Support was only able to give the "programmed" resolutions. (And I had already identified symptoms at the underlying unix OS level which they seemed to not know much about.)

If the Apple Store can't help, next is "buy a new machine" and write the mid 2012 machines off as not really being fully compatible with Catalina for some reason. (Disappointing)
