Troubleshooting a Printer:

Get the Drivers here: imageCLASS LBP6030w - Drivers & Downloads - Canon Support.

Restart and then Print:

Having just installed the drivers, restart your Mac. See if it prints.

How Much Toner Remains?:

Is the toner in your printer being shown as empty? What happens when you print? Can you take a screenshot of the error message?

Clear the Print Queue - Then, Test Print:

You might want to check the print queue and see if anything is just sitting there, not printing. If so, then cancel it. Try printing something else, such as this post. See what occurs. If nothing, clear the print queue.

Download the Drivers Only from Canon:

As for the drivers, to a avoid scams and the like, download them only from the manufacture(Canon) and none other. So...

  1. Remove: the Printer in System Preferences
  2. Restart: the Mac
  3. Install: the Drivers
  4. Restart: the Mac
  5. Print: a Trst Page

[...]my printer is new and works fine on everything as far as I can tell, Numbers, Pages, Images, but I get a "filter failed" message when trying to print a pdf.

Thank you for the clarification.

This seems just what you need:

It mentions the same model, and mentions the same error... See if it works:
