annoying Java pop-up after Catalina

How do I get rid of this annoying pop-up message: "To use the Java command-line tool you need to install a JDK." I have installed the latest Java update after upgrading my Macbook Pro to Catalina. This message pops up periodically and repeatedly.

MacBook Pro 13", macOS 10.15

I went into the Apple Store with a Genius appointment. As it turns out, Oracle now has the correct update for Java to use with Mac OS Catalina. It is jdk-13.0. It is installed now and the annoying pop-up is finally gone! It seems Oracle was about 5 months behind, but now the problem seems resolved.

You need to figure out what software you have installed that requires Java. Only ones I've heard of are Adobe's CS and some Facebook video chat. There could be others.

They are running some sub-process that needs Java installed. Some of them are coded to only use Apple's legacy Java 6 which doesn't work in Catalina.

As already noted, you can try one of Oracle's Java JDK's from Oracle.com, but if that doesn't work, it is likely because the app developer's are stupid and failed to make the Java app work as it should by finding the most compatible installed Java runtime and using that.

Hi sherri-lee90,

You can these two try two solutions and see if it solves your issue.

Java isn't as necessary as it used to be, but it's still needed from time to time.

You can try this version of Java from Apple (This is from 2017)

If it doesn't solve it, you can visit Oracle and download the latest version from there.

I hope this helps and happy new year!

I had a lengthy session in Chat support. We were able to look in the LaunchAgent folder, the LaunchDaemon folder, and the Login Items at start up. I deleted anything possibly related to Java or suspicious. Then I restarted the Mac and the same pop-up was there! So then I restarted the Mac in Safe Mode and there is no pop-up! The theory is that somehow my cache or start-up directory had an issue. Hopefully the Safe Mode will resolve the problem once and for all. I'll post again if the pop-up comes back.

Adobe has a cleaner tool that is 64-bit that should eliminate everything. See: clean uninstall cs6 suite.

Download the cleaner tool for Mac and run it in order to remove everything. After that, reboot your Mac and hopefully you won't see the message to install java sdk.

Older software sch as adobe Photoshop and Illustrator cs6 or earlier requires legacy java support. Even if you deleted the applications themselves there could still be support files that ask for Java.

I hope this helps.
