iPad beeps when connected to Mac USB

Since updating my iPad, it now beeps when pugged into my Mac to synch. The battery icon is green ( ~ 40% charge), with a lightning icon in the battery, and the entire battery icon blinks. The charge level indicates that the iPad is not getting charged. Is this a cable problem? (but the iPad synchs normally with the cable.)
