Videos imported to iMovie turn green

Video looks good upon import but when I scroll thumbnail it pixelates in preview. When I drag it to timeline for editing it turns green. Using latest version of iMovie I could find in app store, but had this same problem with previous version. Source of video imported makes no difference. Have tried a few different and still same problem. Pixelating and green problem only occurs in this one app, and nowhere else in any other editing app* or player. Currently running iMovie 10.1.14 on Mojave.

(* I prefer to use iMovie for quick, simple edits and easy sharing)

Pixelation/artifacts issues have been reported on this forum several times. Possible correlation when using 4k video or video in HEVC format recorded by an iPhone. Sometimes setting the iPhone setting to Photos/Transfer to Mac or PC/Automatic helps. One user found that using QuickTimePlayer to export the video from 4k down to 1080 worked.
