the automatic network location selection on my new MacBook Pro is not working

The automatic network location selection on my MacBook Pro is not working. How do I fix it?

When Network selection for WiFi is Automatic the computer either will not connect to internet or only connects to some sites. I cannot determine why only certain sites are effected. If I add a location then it will connect for a while and then the same problem occurs. I have to keep adding locations.

You do not state what MacOS— was this after an upgrade?
