Struggling with Catalina update - may be something else?

Currently running Mojave on my iMac 18,3. Catalina will not load. Message says "Volume is not formatted as APFS" ????

iMac 27" 5K, macOS 10.14

Mojave had the option to to run HFS or APFS—however Catalina want to see APFS file format.



You can convert HFS to apfs on the fly—


Requires booting into Recovery


Convert HFS to APFS via Disk Utility

  1. To start with, you need to restart Mac in the recovery mode. ...
  2. In a while, you will see Apple's logo as your Mac would be restarted in the recovery mode.
  3. Afterward, you need to launch the Disk Utility application. ...
  4. Right-click the drive and select the option of “Convert to APFS”.


It is a surprisingly fast conversion.
