Mail preference page too long

Since upgrading to Catalina my iMac the preference signature page is too long so the corner arrows can't be used to pull page bottom up even when page is as far as it will go to top of screen.

iMac 27", macOS 10.15

Try forcing scroll bars to be always on -- in System Preferences in the General tab, enable "Always" in the "Show Scroll Bars" option. Think you will need to restart Mail to make this take affect.

I see scroll bar's on my list of signatures when I tried this.

Good luck...

Hi there, foxtail.

I see that the Preference menu for the Mail application on your Mac is too large to use, and I'm glad to help.

Change your Mac display’s resolution -- Go to System Preferences and select Displays then choose the “Display” tag. If you have "Scaled" selected, you may have selected a resolution that's too large to view everything. Try the different resolutions provided to see which one works best.

Change Zoom preferences for accessibility on Mac -- If you were using the default for you display or the resolution that works best for you, see if you're able to zoom out of that screen. To zoom in, you use Option-Command-Equal Sign. To zoom out, use Option-Command-Minus Sign. If the display doesn't adjust when you zoom out, that's as far as it will go.

Let me know how that goes, and take care!

Here is something else you can try. No idea if it will help, but it does not hurt.

1 Quit Mail

2 Press command-shift-G, and type

~/Library/Preferences

3 Drag the file com.apple.Mail.plist out of the folder and to the Desktop, for example

4 Start Mail again. A new plist file should be created. See if things improved. If nothing changed, you can drag the plist file from the Desktop back to its original location

Try making the window smaller from the top corners of Mail signatures window and then drag up the entire window - repeat until you see the bottom corners of the Mail window and then adjust till you're happy with the situation.

Perhaps one of the plist preference file for Mail.app got corrupted? If you know how to edit plist files you might take a look at it and see what the window size and position is set to -- BBEdit (they have a free trial at https://www.barrebones.com/products/bbedit/download.html) can edit plist files.

I think the Signatures window state is saved in a plist file that is located in "~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Saved Application State/com.apple.mail.savedState/windows.plist" -- it might be easiest to exit out of Mail.app and then move that file to your Desktop and then start Mail.app back up to test if this is the case. If things are better, then you can try and figure out which of the plist settings is the problem -- will leave that exercise to you. If no change, exit out of Mail.app again, then move back the file to the old location and overwrite the newly created one (Mail.app should have created a new one when it started up, but that might have changed other things that you had setup). You might compare the two before to see what all had changed - this might give a clue on the exact setting that needed changing.

Good luck...

Thanks for trying those steps and getting back to us, foxtail. It's appreciated. Since the preference pane is still too large, I have more steps to use.

Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac -- Reset the nonvolatile random-access memory (NVRAM) using the steps in this article. See if the preference pane appears as expected.

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac -- If resetting the NVRAM didn't resolve the issue, restart your Mac in safe mode and see how it appears. If it works while in safe mode, reboot normally and test again in your own user account.

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac -- If the issue is also happening in safe mode, use this article to create and test a new administrative user account. This will demonstrate if the issue is isolated to your account, or if it's system wide. You may need to add an email account in order to test in this new admin user profile.

Get back to us when you're able.

Cheers!
