Lost ability to do double-sided printing to Canon MX-860

Hi folks,

I'm running MacOS Mojave, 10.14.6 with a version 16.10.0.0 printer driver for the Canon MX-860. In a recent move, the network addresses changed and I reinstalled my printer to get it working. The new printer dialog does NOT have the "Duplex Printing and Margin" item that used to be there. I do have "Layout" as an option there, with a "Two-sided" item which is greyed out. This all means that I can no longer print double-sided, which is a real loss. I downloaded the most recent "Canon IJ Network Tool Ver.4.7.2" from Canon and installed another instance of the printer, but I see the same thing. Can anyone give me an idea of how to get this working again or explain why it can't?

Thanks,

Rob T

The last version of the OS that Canon provided a driver for this printer was 10.10. So Canon stopped supporting it a while ago. On this page https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/self-help-center/Mac-OSX-Compatibility the PIXMA MX-860 is not even listed.

That said, it might still work. In your Print menu, instead of selecting "Layout," can you see an option to select called "Printer Features"? Is so, select that and note that in the dialog box that comes up, you can scroll down past the options immediately visible (this is not obvious at first, but the options listed do scroll down). You should see a duplex or two-sided option as you scroll down.

If this is not an available option, you can try resetting the printing system, remove the printer, and re-add it. but Canon has apparently stopped supporting some of these older printers. Note that the Canon IJ Network tool is used to configure network settings, but is not a printer driver that enables specific print options.
