Apple Gift Card Complaint: an iTunes card cannot be purchased from the apple store with a gift card.

Is there any way to purchase an iTunes Gift card through the apple online store using the apple store gift card? I went into the Apple Store in Annapolis, MD and asked for an iTunes gift card for my daughter. I was sold a white gift card which iTunes would not accept. I went back to the Apple Store (1 1/2 hour drive) and spoke with the representative who stated it was the wrong type of gift card. He said we needed to download the "Apple Store" app and then redeem it, and told us to purchase the iTunes card in the Apple Store online. Then my daughter is told by the online Apple Store that we cannot purchase the iTunes gift card using a gift card. The representative was not knowledgeable and wasted my money. There is no where on the Apple website to comment on a situation like this.
