Failure to reinstall Mac OS using recover: error message “Can't download the additional components needed to install OS X”

I need help restoring my Mac desktop to an older version of Mac OS. I am following the outlined steps, it keep getting the same error message. I have a hardwired inter connection, so it is not due to an unstable internet connection. HELP!

iMac 27", macOS 10.13

The certificates for several of Apples OS's expired sometime in October, Apple have been very poor at getting these updated with valid certificates. This may be the problem you are experiencing. Try this workaround, we are going to set the time and date on your mac to a date previous to the expiry date of the certificates.

Boot to your Recovery HD, click on Utilities in the menubar select Terminal.

Enter a new date, for example

date -u 0104210218

press Return

Now try downloading the OS.

If this works then when the OS is installed and booted up you can Open System Preferences> Date & Time

and reset the time to today.

Did you try the date command with sudo as suggested above, what error did it come up with

if you want help you really need to provide details.

Of course you will get the error, the server has a copy of Mac OS X Lion that has expired certificates

that is why we are trying to change the date through Terminal to a date preceding the expiration of the certificates

so that you can get it installed. There has been plenty of success on here using this method, read the other posts in this community.

Apple will not look at the logs, Apple will not look at your mac as it is considered 'obsolete' by them,

that does not mean it will not work or can be got working.

High Sierra should be no slower than any other OS, a minimum 4GBs RAM is recommended (2GBs is not enough) sometimes you are better sorting out your problems rather than going backwards. What apps were not compatible with High Sierra, could you not find updates or alternatives.

Before upgrading you should always make a full back up if not two. Always check your third party apps for compatibility

with the new OS, and always check that any printers/ scanners etc have updated drivers and software.

As your mac is on High Sierra and you want to wipe the Disk properly, boot to Recovery

open Disk Utility, click View in the menubar, select Show All Devices. Now click on the Disk

not the indented Volume. Click on Erase, give the Disk a name, Format: Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)

Scheme: GUID Partition Map, click on Erase.

Lets try the Date again open Terminal from Utilities in the menubar select Terminal

enter the text

sudo date -u 0104190018

press Return

Now try reinstalling the original OS.

I copied and pasted the command...here's the error in Terminal:

date: bind: Permission denied

date: settimeofday (timeval): Operation not permitted

My Mac came with Mac OSX Lion installed, it's a iMac 27-inch, Mid 2011. I foolishly upgraded to macOS High Sierra without first doing a time machine backup and now I can't revert the operating system. Since upgrading to High Sierra my machine has been incredibly slow and I have a few applications that are incompatible with High Sierra.

I am folowing the instructions in the article you cited. I have to erase my harddrive each time because restoring Mac OSX Lion isn't even a choice, there is an error message that says something to the effect that there is a newer version of the OS installed on this harddrive so it can't be loaded. I erase teh harddrive using dis utilities, then back to installing Mac OS X Lion. It starts the installation process, then errors out with the error message "Can't download the additional components needed to install OS X". I have tried this three times now!

I appreciate your help.
